Aurukun Sly Grog Campaign
Aurukun Sly Grog Indigenous Social Media Campaign

Over a two-month period, we worked closely with the community alongside the team at Culturev8 to develop campaign messaging that was both culturally appropriate and effective. This process focused on ensuring the right messages were communicated in the right way, reflecting local context and priorities. As with many remote communities, it was equally important to assess and apply best-practice approaches for delivering and distributing content across both social media and print platforms.

Recognising that English is a second language for many residents, the campaign materials were developed in both Wik-Mungkan and English. This approach strengthened cultural relevance and ensured the messaging was accessible, grounded, and locally meaningful.

Building capacity and creating opportunities in remote and regional communities is central to who we are and what we do. As part of this commitment, we engaged two young members of the Aurukun community to work alongside us, guiding and contributing to the development of campaign assets and creative outputs. Their involvement ensured the work remained culturally informed, authentic, and connected to community voice, while also supporting skills development and local ownership of the campaign.

The campaign

Alongside the print collateral, we developed a series of campaign videos for distribution across social media platforms in both English and Wik-Mungkan, supported by English subtitles. The videos proved highly effective, reaching targeted locations and demographic audiences throughout the Western Cape York communities.

Analytics were integrated across the campaign, including the use of QR codes on print materials and performance tracking across social media platforms. The results demonstrated strong engagement and confirmed the campaign’s impact in raising awareness of the dangers associated with homebrew and sly grogging within the community.

The campaign was well received, with strong engagement, and reflected a respectful, culturally informed approach aligned with community needs.
